Breaking up is hard to do, right? Well, do yourself and don't make it harder than it has to be. Unless your boyfriend or girlfriend is the world's worst person, you owe it to them to treat the matter with some measure of self-respect, or you run the risk of creating a Glen Close type of situation. Granted, everyone has their own communication styles, but there is a right way and a wrong way to break up with someone, no matter their age or sex. I'll get to the right ways soon enough in a future article, but today I want to address the wrong ways -- cos more people seem to choose them over the right. Those people, by the way, are prats and aren't grown-up enough to have a real relationship. Wondering if you or someone you've dated has utterly screwed up when it came to breaking up? If they've done anything on this list, they have.

1. Breaking up by text message.

You are a first class loser if you've even considered doing this one. If you're 10 years old and the extent of your relationship has been holding hands on the playground at recess -- ok, you can get away with this. But if your relationship involved the swapping of bodily fluids at some point, you don't get to do this one without losing your reputation as a grown up. I would never date a man who did this to anyone, ever.

2. Breaking up through a friend.

Not only does this make you a loser, it makes your friend one, as well. If you're a tween who changes boyfriends/girlfriends every week, this is probably your preferred method. If you're over the age of 18 and you're not grown up enough to end something yourself, you aren't grown up, period.

3. Breaking up by email.

Not as bad as breaking up by text message, but still bad. I had someone do this to me once, and I lost all respect for him. Not only does this say you're not man enough (or woman enough, if that's the case), it says you probably never were.

4. Breaking up by phone.

This one isn't as bad as the others, as you've at least got the balls to say something in a person to person fashion -- but it's still pretty lame. At least make sure you actually talk to the person you're breaking up with, and don't just leave them a voice message.

5. Breaking up via fake drama.

It's probably not a good idea to tell your boyfriend or girlfriend that you have to break up with them because your mother has died and you just can't cope. Also not a good idea to make it sound like you're doing the boyfriend/girlfriend a favor, sparing them your company, as it's sure to be depressing being around someone who is crying every day. And it would be a really bad idea to then take your perfectly healthy mum out to dinner, where people can see the two of you together and then Tweet all about your lying heart. If you must lie, lie about something that isn't going to make you look like an arse.

Even these methods are too advanced for some people. One of my girlfriends, with whom I had a very serious and prolonged affair, tried to break up with me by way of a letter filled with hints and innuendos. She had started a relationship with one of her co-workers. Her hint was to accuse me of starting a relationship with one of mine! Isn't that clever? She wanted to tell me that she didn't love me. Her hint was to say "I emphatically love you." Smart, eh? When I failed to get the point, she was miffed and said, "I can't communicate with you!" There are quite a few people out there who are utterly allergic to candor. They feel in their guts that almost anything is preferable to telling the truth. This girl was one of them.

No matter what you do it isn't fun but I have always found that being honest and straightforward is the best course of action for me.

Why did I not think about these methods when I broke up with my boyfriend? I instead preferred to meet him at the Coffee Shop and break the news!

I remember hearing that Sylvester Stallone broke up with one of his girlfriends through Fed Ex I thought that was resourceful but definitely put him up on the loser chart in my book. If memory serves he ended up marrying her later.

Good hub my dear. I can safely tell you and the whole world that I am innocent of all of the above methods. Now I await for your next installment on same subject.
