How to Make a Rootbeer Float

I can still remember getting excited as a kid when my mother would make root beer floats. They were a super special treat that we only had once or twice a year, for some reason. When I realized how easy they were to make, it prompted me to wonder why we didn't have them more often. Like, you know, every day. My mother responded by giving me 'the look' and I knew that I'd never be able to talk her into it. But seriously, does anyone not love these? I suppose that there are some people who don't like a good ice-cream float, but I've never met any of them. Of course, these delicious summer favorites don't have to be limited to root beer -- many people use coke, cream soda, grape soda or even orange soda in their ice-cream floats instead, depending on where they grew up and which drink they love the most. Personally, I don't really enjoy root beer by itself, but put a scoop of vanilla ice-cream in there, and OMG! My fave!

• Soda. A&W Root Beer is the most famous where I come from, but you could use anything you like, really. Some people prefer Coke, some Cream Soda, some Orange Soda, some Grape Soda. Whatever floats your boat (or ice-cream, in this case).

• High-quality vanilla ice-cream. Don't get that vanilla ice-cream that dissolves the second it touches the root beer. It won't be pretty and it's a pain in the backside to get a the ice-cream if it liquefies immediately. You could, in theory, try another flavor, but you may want to test it first to be sure it tastes good with whatever you're drinking.

• A gigantic cup. Ok, it doesn't really have to be gigantic. Whatever works for you.

• A big spoon. Or an ice-cream scooper, if you've got one.
  

• A straw. This is for people who actually have the patience to drink their float, as opposed to gulping it down!

Making Your Ice Cream Float

1. Place your gigantic cup in front of you.

2. Grab the biggest scoop of vanilla you can manage.

3. Place your big scoop of vanilla ice cream into your gigantic cup.

4. Pour your soda over it.

5. Stick your straw in there.
   

6. Enjoy your root beer float!
