Infant Acid Reflux AR Baby Pillow

People often think of reflux as being an adult disease – and one that only hot dog fans get. Nope, not so. In fact, 25% of babies will experience this in their first year, and some will never outgrow it. It’s not usually due to a life threatening condition, and it’s usually not something you need to be overly concerned about.

What is acid reflux?

Simply put, it's when acid from the stomach travels up toward, and into, the esophagus. You’ve likely had this at least once or twice, yourself. That burning sensation that hits your throat and makes you wince in distaste, and possibly pain. Well, that’s something many babies experience, too.

What causes it?

In babies, it’s usually caused by an immature intestinal tract. Things just aren’t completely coordinated yet. It’s not uncommon, and it doesn’t mean your baby is underdeveloped.

What are some of more common symptoms?

• Wet burping
• Chronic crying
• Sleep problems, especially waking up frequently
• Indicating hunger, accepting food and then refusing it after a few bites
• Respiratory problems
• Sinus problems
• Ear infections
• Highly irritable
• Halitosis

• 1. Feed smaller portions, but increase the frequency of feeding intervals. Smaller amounts of food absorb more quickly, leaving less excess to burp back up.
• 2. Thicken baby's food.
• 3. Keep baby quiet and calm for at least 30 minutes after eating. This is because any exertion on the stomach – even laughing – can lead to reflux.
• 4. Many doctors recommend holding baby upright, or putting him on his stomach, for 30 minutes after feeding. (However, if your child pitches a fit in either position, they’re likely to wind up gassy, which is probably going to make the reflux worse.)

My baby hates lying on his stomach after eating, and holding him for 30 minutes can be rather tiring.
