Infant Acid Reflux AR Baby Pillow

Updated on July 10, 2012

People often think of reflux as being an adult disease – and one that only hot dog fans get. Nope, not so. In fact, 25% of babies will experience this in their first year, and some will never outgrow it. It’s not usually due to a life threatening condition, and it’s usually not something you need to be overly concerned about.

You should, however, take measures to prevent or treat the condition if your child is suffering from it, as it sometimes can lead to other issues, like sinus and ear infections. Not to mention the fact it’s more than a little unpleasant when acid pops into the esophagus!

Let’s look at the basics:

What is acid reflux?

Simply put, it's when acid from the stomach travels up toward, and into, the esophagus. You’ve likely had this at least once or twice, yourself. That burning sensation that hits your throat and makes you wince in distaste, and possibly pain. Well, that’s something many babies experience, too.

What causes it?

In babies, it’s usually caused by an immature intestinal tract. Things just aren’t completely coordinated yet. It’s not uncommon, and it doesn’t mean your baby is underdeveloped.

What are some of more common symptoms?

  • Wet burping
  • Chronic crying
  • Sleep problems, especially waking up frequently
  • Indicating hunger, accepting food and then refusing it after a few bites
  • Respiratory problems
  • Sinus problems
  • Ear infections
  • Highly irritable
  • Halitosis

The Acid Reflux Wedge Pillow For Baby

How can I prevent it?

  • 1. Feed smaller portions, but increase the frequency of feeding intervals. Smaller amounts of food absorb more quickly, leaving less excess to burp back up.
  • 2. Thicken baby's food.
  • 3. Keep baby quiet and calm for at least 30 minutes after eating. This is because any exertion on the stomach – even laughing – can lead to reflux.
  • 4. Many doctors recommend holding baby upright, or putting him on his stomach, for 30 minutes after feeding. (However, if your child pitches a fit in either position, they’re likely to wind up gassy, which is probably going to make the reflux worse.)

My baby hates lying on his stomach after eating, and holding him for 30 minutes can be rather tiring.

So make your life easier - buy a baby wedge pillow that’s been designed for exactly this; preventing reflux in your child. According to the manufacturer, it’s made of stain resitant, soft female velcro, and measures twenty inches in diameter. The pillow sits at a doctor recommended 30 degree angle, to prevent reflux. (Supports babies up to 28 pounds.)

What are they called, again?

You'll see them called The Baby Acid Reflux Pillow, The Baby AR Pillow or The Baby AR Pillow. (Note: You want the kind that straps baby in, like that you see in the photo - babies tend to roll off of any other kind, winding up on their backs or tummies.)

How much is it?

About 100 bucks. And if you want extra pillowcases, that’ll run you about 30 bucks a pair. And there you are - happy feeding!
